M.P: Hogyan érezted magad, amikor 1990 júniusában csengett a telefonod, és Michael volt a vonal másik végén?
R.S.:A legelső telefonbeszélgetéstől kezdve, az összes további beszélgetésünkön keresztül, rengeteg közös mókában és szórakozásban volt részünk, mind telefonon keresztül, mind személyesen. Ms Norma e. Staikos, aki Michael ügyeit intézte, az MJJ Production nevű cégnél Los Angelesben, hívott fel először hogy közölje velem, hogy Michael Jackson szeretne velem beszélni. M.P: Mit éreztél, amikor kiderült, hogy Michael Jackson lesz a következő ügyfeled?
R.S.:Még soha életemben nem árasztott el az a fajta csodálat, mint amit akkor éreztem. Tudtam, hogy segíthetek Michaelnek megalkotni a “Neverland Álmot”. Ő volt talán a legkönnyebben kezelhető, és leghálásabb ügyfelem, akivel azelőtt és azóta dolgohattam.
M.P: Honnan jött az ötlet, hogy körhintákat fogsz árulni és vidámparkokat fogsz fejleszteni?
R.S.:1986 júniusában Mr. Richard G.Chance a Chance Rides nevű cég, ami egyébként a Kansas-béli Wichita városban működik, ügyvezetője megkérdezte tőlem, hogy nincs e kedvem náluk dolgozni a viámparkok számára készülő játékok dívizóban. Akkor még nem is tudatosult bennem, hogy a Chance Rides volt a legnagyobb vidámpark gyártó a nyugati parton. A kimagasló szakmai hátteremmel, amit ingatlan értékesítés és fejlesztés területén szereztem, 1986-ban elkezdtem bevezetni a bevásárolóközpont fejlesztőknek, és üzemeltetőknek a körhinta üzletágunkat.
Bradley & Kaye újrahasználható öntőformákat fejlesztett ki, hogy utánozni tudja a régi, antik körhinták állatait, amely azonnal vezető üzletág lett. Néhány éven belül, Chance lett a Vidámpark ipar legnagyobb gyártója, a Dentzel stílusú körhinták másolataival. Felhasználva az ingatlan értékesítésben és fejlesztésben elért tapasztalataimat, rövid időn belül, a Chancet a világ vezetőjévé tettem, azon cégek közül, akik bevásárlóközpontokban építettek, és üzemeltettek körhintátkat szerte az Államokban és Canadában.
M.P: Közeli barátja lettél Michaelnek. Lehetségesnek tartod, hogy őszinte barátság alakuljon ki egy ekkora sztárral egy “hétköznapi” embernek?
R.S.:Teljes mértékben! A közeli barátságunk minden részlete, a teljesítményre, a megbízhatóságra, és a bizalmra épült. (P-T-T), ami számomra alap értékrend. Michael csak mint előadó volt nagy sztár, de mint magánember, hihetetlenül valódi volt, valaki aki azt szerette volna mindig, hogy mint emberre emlékezzenek, ne úgy mint egy emberséges előadóra. Michael az előadásait, a zenéjét, csak arra szerette volna felhasználni, hogy elérje élete célját, hogy segítsen a nincstelen gyermekeken.
M.P: Mit gondoltál akkor, amikor építetted a parkot, és mit gondolsz most Neverlandről, arról, amit Michael megálmodott, és megépíttetett magának?
R.S.:Személyesen támogattam mindig Michaelt, hogy valósítsa meg a hosszútávú álmát, a “Neverland Álmot”, hogy valóra váljon az a nagyszerű dolog, amit most Neverland Valley Ranchnek és Neverland Vidámparknak nevezünk, ami az “egyetlen az univerzumban”. A legszebb időszakban, Neverland, egy elmondhatatlanul gyönyörű hely volt, rengeteg bronz szoborral, számtalan játszadozó gyermekkel, a hatalmas tölgyfákon ezernyi fényfüzér ragyogott, az eldugott hangfalakból, amik sziklának voltak álcázva, egész nap Disney zene szólt szerte a völgyben, gyönyörű, ezernyi színben pompázó virággal, melyekből sokszor állatfigurákat formáztak. Egy nyugalommal, békével, spiritualizmussal, boldogsággal teli, különleges hely, ahol osztozni lehet a szeretetben.
Az egyik legnagyobb kihívásunk az volt, hogy megpróbáljuk a hatósági engedélyeket elintézni. Gyakorlatilag, folyamatosan belekötöttek mindenbe a megyei hivatalos szervek. Ők, és Michael szomszédai nem voltak túl boldogok attól, amit Michael művelt a 2700 holdnyi területű saját tulajdonú Neverland ranchen, mégha semmit sem lehetett látni belőle, és semmi nem volt elérhető a Parkon kívüli közönségnek. Sikernek könyveltük el, ha valamire megkaptuk az engedélyt, azokból amiket Michael szeretett volna, habár semmilyen irányelvük nem volt az engedélyekre vonatkozóan, amiből kifolyólag folyamatosan ingot a talaj a lábunk alatt.
Megpróbáltam felvenni a kapcsolatot Tom Barrackkal, a Colony Capitaltól, annak érdekében, hogy kitaláljunk valamit, hogyan tudnánk megmenteni Neverland Valleyt. Igen távolságtartónak, tartózkodónak, és vonakodónak találtam azzal kapcsolatban, hogy találkozzunk Neverlandben, annak ellenére, hogy ott lakott mellette. Kezdetnek szerettem volna megmutatni neki egy példányt a “Maker of Dreams” című könyvemből, de aztán gyorsan váltott a “De miért testvérem?” -re
Ha Michael Neverland birtoka végleg elveszik, az egy örökkévalóságig érezhető tragédia lesz. A történelemben nem volt még egy olyan hely, amit direkt arra terveztek, hogy a hátrányos helyzetű, és beteg gyermekek gyógyuljanak benne. Ez volt Neverland!
Ha bármilyen vevő tervezi, hogy megszerzi Neverlandet, hogy egy turista látványosságot csináljon belőle, mint Elvis Presley otthonából, Gracelandből, biztosíthatom az olvasóidat, hogy a helyi hivatalok minden erejükkel meg fogják akadályozni. Az egyetlen esélye egy vásárlónak az lehet, hogy ugyanazt folytatja, amit Michael elkezdett, csak alacsonyabb fenntartási költségekkel, és zajos bulik nélkül, mivel ezek néha olyan nagyszabásúak voltak, hogy már a helyi hatóságokat is zavarták. M.P: Neverland életed nagy műve, vagy van valami, amit megemlítenél, ami hasonlóan közel állt hozzád?
R.S.:Két jelentős dolog volt eddig az életemben,
1., személyesen segíthettem Michael Jacksonnak megvalósítani hosszútávú fantáziáját, álmát, a Neverland Álmot, a 2700 hektár nagyságú Neverland Valley Ranchet, Los Olivos mellett, Kalifornia Államban.
2., a másik egy személyes dolog, mégpedig 2002 júniusában sikerült megszereznem egy nagyon különleges, történelmileg nagyon fontos zászlót, amit az amerikai függetlenségi háborúban, 1864. november 30-én éjjel, a tennesseei Franklin csatában, Corporal Joseph T. Mcbride, a saját életét kockáztatva, tűzharcban szerzett meg, aztán kitűzte a barikád tetejére. Ez, amiből egyébként csupán 12 létezik, eltűnt az amerikai történelemből közel 140 évre.
M.P:Neverland melyik része a legkülönlegesebb számodra, és miért?
R.S.:Talán ez a legkönyebb kérdés, amit valaha is kérdeztek tőlem, azóta, hogy 1990 nyarán befejeztük a Neverland projektet, barátommal Michael Jacksonnal. Erre a gyönyörű kérdésre csak egy válasz lehet, maga MICHAEL JACKSON!!!
És hogy miért? Remélem, hogy a kérdést nagyon is megválaszolom a könyvemben azzal a rengeteg történettel, és fotóval, amit beleírtam.
M.P: Miért, és mikor döntötted el, hogy könyvet írsz Neverlandről?
R.S.:Több mint egy évtizeddel azután, hogy a Neverland projekt befejeződött, a ’90-es évek közepétől, egy humanitárius vidámparkon dolgoztam, próbáltam rávenni Michaelt, hogy csatlakozzon hozzám a megvalósításban. Ami azt jelentette, hogy megvásároltuk, és felújítottuk a már nem használt vidámparki játékokat, szerte az Egyesült Államokban, és Kanadában, majd elszállítottuk őket szegényebb országokba, ahol kisebb vidámparkokat építettünk belőlük, a gyermekek szórakoztatása végett. Ezt körülbelül egy évtizedig csináltam az Egyesült Államokban, úgyhogy jól tudtam, hogy ezek a lepusztult játékok hol találhatók. Az elsődleges célpontom Kuba volt, ahol a vidámparkok, és játékok legtöbbje 1959 előtt épült, a jelenlegi Castro rendszert megelőzően.
Hogy még többet tudjak ezeken a feladatokon dolgozni, és még más projekteken, úgy döntöttem, hogy 2008 decemberében nyugdíjba vonulok. Nem sokkal ezután possztraumás stresszzavart diagnosztizáltak nálam, és depressziót a helyi Veterán Kórházban, annak eredményeként, hogy kétszer, 1968 és ‘70 között, Vietnámban szolgáltam. Csatlakoztam a PTSD terápiás programhoz, Dr Jeremy Crosby vezetése alatt, aki egy nagyon elismert szakember a saját szakterületén. Dr Cosby nemrégiben a házigazdja volt, a 3 Maker of Dreams rádiós blogomnak, amit 2014 augusztus 29. –én, 30-án és 31-én rögzítettek tisztelegve Michael 56. születésnapja előtt. (A MANÓPROGRAM IS MEGHÍVÁST KAPOTT A RÉSZVTELRE – szerk.) Nagyjából 1 évvel PTSD program megkezdése után, Dr Crosby azt javasolta, hogy írjak valamit, terápiás céllal. Ezt követően rengeteget gondolkodtam a témáról, és rögtön tudtam, miután Michael elhagyott minket, hogy én vagyok az egyetlen személy, aki papírra tudja vetni azt, hogy hogyan készült el Michael Neverland Álma. Azonban hozzákezdeni borzasztóan nehéz volt.
2012 őszén, Németországban, egy önkéntes csoporttal találkoztam, www.mjjbook.com azzal kapcsolatban, hogy írhatok egy fejezetet, másodikként megjelenő könyvükbe, ami Michaelről szólt, és az ő humanitárius erőfeszítéseiről, aminek az volt a címe, hogy “Life for L.O.V.E.”. A könyvből származó összes bevételt felajánlották Michael kedvenc jótékonysági szervezetének, a Make-A-Wish Alapítványnak. 2013 tavaszán, amikor a kiadási határidő nagyon közeledett, elmondták, hogy Michael előadó barátja, David Nordahl, is írt egy fejezetet a könyvbe.
Az ő támogatásukkal, és Michael másik ismerősének, Brad Sundberg támogatásával, aki a világítást építette Neverlandben, végül képes voltam megírni, és átadni nekik a kért fejezetet. M.P: Rengeteg személyes történetet olvashatunk a könyvben Marlon Brandoról, Liz Taylorról, és az egész Jackson családról. Elmesélnél egy rövid történetet, ami még ma is megmosolygtat, abból az időből?
R.S.:Rengeteg vicces történetre tudok visszagondolni, néhányukat meg is írtam a könyvemben, amiken mindig tudok nevetni akárhányszor felidézem őket. Ha csak egy történetet ragadhatok ki, amit megoszthatok a Manóprogram olvasóival, az nagyon nehéz lenne, így elmesélek néhányat.
Az első emlékeim közül való 1990. október 31.-a, Halloween napja (nagyon fontos dátum, erre még visszatérek) amikor jónéhányan ültünk a Neverland Valley bitrokon fekvő ház nappalijában, vacsorához készülve, hogy megünnepeljük a Neverland Valley Park megnyitását. Michael lecsoszogott a nappaliban a hagyományosan viselt hosszú ujjú piros ingében, fehér pólóval, fekete nadrágjában, fehér zoknival, és fekete mokaszinben, majd hirtelen megállt közvetlenül előttem és kijelentette: “Rob, rossz voltam!” Mondanom sem kell, egy picit meglepődtem, és megkérdeztem: “Michael mire gondolsz?” Aztán Michael elmesélte, hogy az éjszaka folyamán, mielőtt beszélt volna barátjával, David Nordahllal, kilopózott és a zárt szállítóautóban elemlámpával megnézte a körhinta állatait, amiket belül tároltunk, pont azért, hogy ne lássa meg.
Ekkortájt David ellátogatott Neverlandbe, hogy elhozza az éppen elkészült hatalmas festményét, ami a Mesélő címet viselte, és a hall bejáratánál, a lépcsővel szemben, a falon lógott. Vacsora után, Michael és én, néhány baráttal kimentünk a parkba és elsőként próbáltuk ki az új körhintát. Michaellel, jópár évvel később, még mindig nagyon nevettünk rajta, amikor felidéztük. Egy másik eset az akkori feleségemhez, Ritához kapcsolódik, amikor 1992 környékén egyik este hazaértem az irodából (ha jól emlékszem)
Rita és én Neverland Valleyben nyaraltunk néhány hétig, lovagoltunk a San Rafael hegyekben, a ranch hátsó részén, voltunk a vidámparkban, megnéztük az állatkertet, stb. De ő még nem találkozott és nem is beszélt Michaellel.
Azon a nevezetes napon, amikor beléptem az ajtón, Rita körbe körbe táncolt, szószerint röpdösött örömében és azt ismételgette: “Beszéltem Michael Jacksonnal, beszéltem Michael Jacksonnal! “ Úgy tűnt hogy Michael próbált elérni telefonon a cégnél, de azt mondták neki, hogy már elindultam haza, úgyhogy ő egyszerűen feltárcsázta az otthoni számomat, és elcsevegett a feleségemmel, majd megkérte, hívjam vissza ha hazaértem.

Amikor Michael halála után rádöbbentem, hogy ezen a világon senki más nem lett volna képes ilyen módon dokumentálni ezt a történelmileg nagyon fontos, és gyakorlatilag ismeretlen részletét az életének, mivel nekem van a legtöbb anyagom a kezdetektől, nekem van a legtöbb fotóm Michael Neverland Álomról, az ő Neverland Valley birtokán. Így hát leírtam az emlékeimet, hogy segítsek megőrizni Michael hihetetlen örökségét, azt a pár évét, amikor valóban a legboldogabb volt. És most, lelkünkben újra velünk van!

Szeretném tájékoztatni Michael összes rajongóját a világon, hogy 2015 október 31-én Halloweenkor lesz a 25. évordulója a Parknak, annak amit olyan jól dokumentáltam könyvemben. Azon a bizonyos különleges előestén, amikor összegyültünk Michaelnél a vacsorához, amit a vidámpark megnyitása követett, velem és néhány vendéggel, a Halloween éjszakáján megnyitott vidámpark, egy nagyon szimbólikus esemény lett, amit szeretnék, ha világszerte ünnepelnének, és egy nagy esemény lenne 2015 októberében, amiből remélem, hogy a Children of the World alapítványnak is bevétele származik majd. Ehhez minden ötletet, segítséget nagyon köszönök.

S-L-F: egy húron pendülni.
Ezek nélkül az elveim nélkül, melyeket életem során, a másokkal történő kapcsolatteremtésnél használtam, nem készülhetett volna el a könyv, és természetesen a Park sem.
Amikor 1990 nyarán, először nekikezdtünk a Park projektnek, az elsődleges szempont Michaelnek és Norma E. Staikosnak, az MJJ Productions igazgatójának, a teljesítmény volt. Norma azt mondta nekem, hogy reméli, hogy Michael nem lesz csalódott. Más szóval hibázni nem lehetett. Minden alkalommal, amikor Michaelnek döntenie kellett , hogy szeretne e további játékokat a Parkba, mindig tudni akarta, hogy az adott játékot mennyi idő alatt lehet telepíteni, és ha lehetséges, ő mindig ott lenne velem, hogy együtt próbáljuk ki. Sokszor felhívta a játék gyártóját, vagy szállítóját, hogy hol tartanak, elkészült e már. A türelem nem volt az erőssége, és az izgatottsági szintje sokszor nagyon magas volt.
Másodszor pedig, az S-L-F szükséges ahhoz, hogy igazán megismerd a másik személyt, főleg Michael esetében! Mindannyian szemtanúi voltunk, ahogyan a média, és egyes személyek, Michaelt gyakorlatilag keresztre feszítették. Ahogy megosztottuk egymással életünk néhány lépését, nagyon különleges viszony alakult ki Michael és köztem. Érezhetted az ártatlanságát, őszinteségét, és azt a vágyát, hogy “meggyógyítsa az egész világot”! Azt szeretném, ha ezen a világon minden ember egy oldalon állna, a szeretet oldalán. – Michael Jackson
Talán a legszebb hozzászólás amit kaptam egy személytől az volt, hogy 1990 és 2003 közt, amikor már nem dolgoztam a Neverland Projekten az volt, hogy Michael gyakran megemlített engem. És amikor Michael tervezte, hogy egy új vidámparkot épít Las Vegasban, Nevadában, az én nevem volt az első, ami eszébe jutott a megvalósítással kapcsolatban. M.P: How did you feel yourself, when you got a call from Michael in June 1990?
RS: From the very first call I received from Michael Jackson, and all conversations thereafter, we had many fun and entertaining visits – both by phone and in person. Ms. Norma E. Staikos, Michael's Executive Administrator at MJJ Productions in Los Angeles, CA, personally called me the day prior to receiving his first call to let me know Michael might be contacting me. During our first visit, Michael was very uplifting, and he could not suppress his excitement with the carrousel literature and video he received from me. I found Michael to be very easy to communicate with and discuss ideas and various options.
M.P: What did you feel, when you realized that he will be your next customer?
RS: I was never at anytime overwhelmed with admiration nor “idolism” while helping Michael create his “Neverland Dream.” He was probably the easiest and most appreciative customer I ever worked with – before and since.
M.P: Why did you start to sell carrousels and develop amusement parks?
RS: In June 1986 I was asked by Mr. Richard G. Chance, CEO of Chance Rides, Inc. located here in Wichita, KS, to come to work for him in their amusement ride division. At the time I did not realize Chance Rides was the largest manufacturer of amusement rides in the Western hemisphere. Through a combination of various events that included my background in commercial real estate sales and development plus the acquisition by Chance in Dec. 1986 of another Amusement Industry manufacturer, Bradley & Kaye Co. in Long Beach, CA, I began promoting our expanded and enhanced line of carrousels to shopping center developers and potential operators. Bradley & Kaye had developed re-usable molds for replicating rare and historical antique carrousel animals, which immediately became a tremendously beautiful improvement of our product line. Within a couple of years, Chance became recognized in the Amusement Industry as the largest manufacturer of the finest product line of replica Dentzel-style carrousels in the World. Through the application of my real estate sales and development expertise, I led Chance to became the World's leader in the installation and operation of carrousels in major shopping centers throughout the United State and Canada.
M.P: You became a very close friend of Michael. Is it possible to make an honest friendship with a huge star like him?
RS: Absolutely! Everything about our close friendship was based on Performance, Truthfulness and Trust (“P-T-T”) – one of my “Rule of 3's.” Michael was only a huge star as a performer, but as a person he was incredibly real and sharing; someone who wanted to be remembered as a “person” - not as a “personality” or performer. Michael viewed the live performances and music as a financial means to achieve his extremely more important mission of helping the World's needy children.
M.P: What did you think during the development period and what do you think now about Michael's Neverland Valley Ranch, and about Michael to create it?
RS: Personally assisting Michael Jackson in creating his longtime fantasy “Neverland Dream” into a wonderful world of reality now known as Neverland Valley Ranch and Neverland Valley Amusement Park was a “Once in this Universe moment!” In it's heyday, Michael's personal “Never Never Land” was an incredibly beautiful place of numerous bronze sculptures including many of children playing, huge oak trees with thousands of tiny “Fairy” lights, hidden “fake rock” speakers everywhere in the valley with Disney-type music constantly playing, amazing colorful flower beds that often included zoomorphic floral figures, serene solitude, peacefulness, spiritualism, happiness and a special place for sharing lot's of L.O.V.E.
One of our continuous challenges was repeatedly having to ask permission from County zoning officials for permission to proceed, virtually at every step of the way. They and some neighbors were not very happy about what Michael was doing inside his private 2,700 acre Neverland Valley Ranch, even though nothing was ever visible nor accessible to the outside general public. We were successful in obtaining permission for a lot of what Michael wanted to do, but without guidelines in the local zoning ordinances that pertained to an amusement park, either free or with a paid admission, we were always on shaky footing.
I personally attempted to contact Tom Barrack at Colony Capital earlier this year about discussing some potential ideas for saving Neverland Valley Ranch, but through an assistant I found him distant, unresponsive and unwilling to meet with me at Neverland, even though he lives nearby. Initially, I wanted to share a copy of my “Maker of Dreams” book with him, but that quickly changed to, “Why bother!”
If Michael’s “Neverland Valley Ranch” family residence is lost forever, it will be a tragedy felt for all eternity! Never in the HIStory of our World has someone’s home been so totally dedicated to something this beautifully created primarily for the beneficial healing found inside Neverland for underprivileged, handicapped and terminally ill children.
If any buyer is interested in acquiring Neverland Valley Ranch for use a “tourist attraction” like Graceland, I can assure your readers it will be blocked by the local County officials at every effort or request submitted. The only hope is for a buyer to maintain the same usually low profile Michael did, except when he wanted to host a party. These events grew in size over the years, and I’m sure became VERY disconcerting to the County officials who were probably in too deep by this time to do much of anything about it. Now, they will probably do all they can to prevent a repeat in the future.
M.P: Is Neverland your most significant achievement of your life or is there anything else what belonged comparatively close to you?
RS: I have been blessed with two very significant and historically important endeavors during my life: (1) personally assisting Michael Jackson in making his long time fantasy “Neverland Dream” become a reality at his 2,700 acre Neverland Valley Ranch near Los Olivos, CA; and (2) my personal local discovery and acquisition in June 2002 of an extremely rare and very historical Confederate battle flag that had been captured during our American Civil War on the evening of Nov. 30, 1864 at the Battle of Franklin in Tennessee after the color bearer, Corporal Joseph T. McBride, sacrificed his own life in the heat of the fight when he planted his regiment's banner atop the Union breastworks, which allowed a Union soldier to capture it. This unfortunate circumstance led to this rare flag (only one of about twelve known examples to exist) disappearing from our American history for almost 140 years.
M.P: Which part of Neverland was the most special for you (?) and why?
RS: This is probably the easiest question to answer I have ever been asked since the development of the “Neverland Dream” project with my friend Michael commenced in the summer of 1990! :) [smiley face] To this wonderful question there can be only one answer – MICHAEL JACKSON!!! The “Why?” I believe is very well explained through the related events and numerous personal photos in my book.
M.P: Why and when did you decided to write a book about Neverland?
RS: For over a decade after departing the Neverland project in the mid-1990's, I worked on a humanitarian amusement ride project that I was planning to approach Michael about joining me in implementing. It entailed the acquisition and renovation of unwanted used rides found throughout the United States and Canada, and then ship them to poor countries where we could create small amusement parks for the enjoyment of the children. I had been doing this for myself in the United States for about a decade, so I knew where a lot of these rides where being stored. My primary target was the island country of Cuba, where most of the amusement rides were built and installed before 1959, prior to current Castro regime.
To allow more time to work on this and some other projects, I decided to retire in Dec. 2008. Soon thereafter I was diagnosed with severe PTSD (Post Traumatic Stress Disorder) and major depression at the local Veterans Hospital as a result of my two tours of military duty in Viet Nam between 1968 and 1970. I entered their PTSD therapy program under the guidance of Dr. Jeremy Crosby, a well known expert in this field. Dr. Crosby recently co-hosted my three “Maker of Dreams” Blog Talk Radio Show episodes recorded Aug. 29, 30 and 31, 2014 to honor Michael's 56th birthday. (See “References” below.) About a year into the PTSD program, Dr. Crosby suggested I write about something I was familiar with as therapy. After starting and stopping on various subjects, except Neverland Valley Park, I knew immediately upon Michael's passing I was about the only person left who could properly document our creation of his “Neverland Dream” in a book. However, getting started was very difficult for me.
In the fall of 2012, I was contacted by a volunteer group in Germany, www.mjjbook.com, regarding the possibility of writing and donating a chapter for their second book about Michael Jackson and his humanitarian efforts titled, A Life for L.O.V.E. All proceeds from their book were going to one of Michael's favorite charities, Make-A-Wish Foundation. In the spring of 2013 as their publication deadline was approaching, they informed me Michael's artist friend, David Nordahl, had already submitted a chapter. With their support and the invaluable assistance of another of Michael's acquaintances, Brad Sundberg who installed lighting and sound at Neverland, I was finally able to compile and deliver the requested chapter. Both David and Brad are designated as fellow Dream Team members in my book who were there with me at Neverland almost from the very beginning. When I was told in July 2013 that MJJBook.com would not be able to publish any of my photos in color, only high quality black and white, I then made the decision to proceed with publishing my own book that would eventually include almost 200 of my photos in full color. A professional media acquaintance, Ms. Laura Weyland-Smith Hatch, agreed to assist me with compiling and editing, and thankfully the rest is now HIStory! Without the occurrence of this sequence of events, I would probably still be trying to complete my book, “Maker of Dreams.”
M.P: We can read lot of personal stories about you and Michael, Marlon Brando, Liz Taylor, and the Jackson family. Would you tell us a short story from that time, which makes you laugh?
RS: There are several amusing occasions that come to mind, some of which I included in my book, that make me chuckle every time they are recalled. To select just one event to share with your readers is very difficult, so I will share a couple of them! One of the very first memorable events personally involving Michael was Halloween Eve, Oct. 31, 1990 (RES: very important historical date to remember!), when several of us were gathering in the living-room of Michael's Neverland Valley Ranch residence prior to an “inaugural dinner” to celebrate the creation and official private opening of his “Neverland Valley Park.” Michael came marching into the living-room wearing his traditional long sleeved red shirt with white tee shirt, black slacks, white socks and black loafers, and abruptly stopped directly in front of me and declared, “Rob, I've been bad!” Needless to say I was more than a bit taken back, and had to inquire, “What do you mean, Michael?” Then Michael proceeded to explain by confessing that during the night before he had talked his artist friend, David Nordahl, into sneaking out to our closed trailer with flashlights to inspect the carrousel animals we had kept stored inside and hidden from his view. David was also visiting Neverland at the same time to deliver his recently completed very large painting titled “The Storyteller” which had recently been hung in the main entry hall across from the stairway. The anticipation was just too much for Michael, who could not wait until Halloween Eve to see all 60 of the very special custom painted carrousel animals after being installed on his new 50-foot Grand Carrousel during that same day. After dinner, Michael and I with some guests retired to the park and rode our very first amusement rides together. Michael and I recalled that evening a couple of years later, and really had a wonderful laugh together! Another incident involved my then wife Rita, when I came home from the office at Chance Rides about 1992, as I recall. Rita and I had taken a vacation to Neverland Valley Ranch for a couple of weeks of horseback riding in the San Rafael mountains at the back of the ranch, partaking in seriously “soaking” water fights, enjoying the amusement park and rides, visiting the zoo, etc., but she had not met nor ever spoken to Michael. On that particular day when I walked in the door, Rita was dancing around and literally bouncing off the walls repeatedly proclaiming, “I got to talk to Michael Jackson! I got to talk to Michael Jackson!” It seems Michael had tried to call me at Chance Rides, but was told I had already left for home, so he simply called my house and proceeded to have a nice visit with my wife and asked for me to call him back when I arrived at home.
M.P: Where can we buy your book, Maker of Dreams - Creating Michael Jackson's "Neverland Valley Park"?

M.P: Would you send a personal message to Manóprogram's readers?
RS: I am hopeful all readers of my book will greatly enjoy the personal stories and viewing the wonderful photos in this beautiful memoir, Maker of Dreams - Creating Michael Jackson's "Neverland Valley Park," which documents in words and almost 200 personal, never before published photographs, some wonderful moments with my friend, Michael Jackson. Together, we created his “Neverland Dream” in a lovely valley on the 2,700 acre Neverland Valley Ranch near Los Olivos, CA that Michael would share with many of the World's underprivileged, handicapped and terminally ill children. Michael turned his personal “Neverland” into a magically special and incredibly beautiful world of spiritual healing and L.O.V.E. This was accomplished through numerous multi-colored floral areas (some with zoomorphic figures), lovely bronze sculptures, adding thousands of lights to the large oak trees and the Disney-type music always wafting through the air.
When compiling, I found both magical and spiritual “healing” and most importantly - a portal to Michael's “Spirit World.” He whispered a message to me in his lovely soft voice during the fall of 2013, when I was very frustrated and depressed, to proceed documenting this historically important chapter of his life that would help preserve his true legacy, and for all who love and miss him, plus the dearly beloved “Children of the World” he left behind.
While reflecting on my work developing the “Maker of Dreams” manuscript, I realized it was truly a “labor of L.O.V.E.” requiring both comical and tearful remembrances. This beautiful, well documented and historically important book was definitely one of the most difficult tasks I've ever accomplished during my entire life – failure was not an option! Upon Michael's passing, I realized there was probably no one else on our planet Earth capable of properly documenting this very historically important and virtually unknown chapter of his life – because I had most of the early documentation and Neverland photographs covering the creation of Michael's “Neverland Dream” at his Neverland Valley Ranch. I wrote my memoir to help preserve and support Michal's incredible legacy and to honor some of Michael Jackson's happiest years during his life...and now with us in Spirit!
“Neverland” 25th Anniversary International Celebration – also read (9) above
I want to inform Michael's worldwide fans that Halloween Eve, October 31st, 2015 will be the 25th Anniversary of “Neverland Valley Park,” an event very well documented in my book. On that very special eve of All Hallows, a wonderful celebration dinner took place in Michael's home, which was followed by the amusement park inauguration with Michael, myself and a few guests. The symbolism created with the combination of Michael's love of disguises and the amusement park inauguration falling on Halloween Eve made this truly a very special event that I would like to see become an International celebration in October 2015, and thereafter, hopefully to benefit some of Michael's “Children of the World” as a fund raising opportunity. Without these two acronyms playing an important role in my life's actions as related to interaction with another person, “Maker of Dreams” would not have become a reality and Neverland Valley Park possibly not created. When the Neverland project first began to develop during the summer of 1990, the most important issue for Michael and his Executive Director at MJJ Productions, Norma E. Staikos, was “Performance.” Norma told me she hoped Michael would not be disappointed. In other words, “Failure was not an option!” Each time Michael made a decision to add another ride to the park, he was always wanting to know how soon it could be delivered, and whenever possible, he would be there to ride it with me. He would often call to inquire about the delivery status of a ride, or the progress at the factory if it was being manufactured. Patience was not his long suit, and his level of excitement was always very high.
Secondly, only through S-L-F can someone really get to know and truly understand another person – especially in Michael's case! No need to elaborate, as we all witnessed the crucifixion of Michael Jackson by media and certain individuals. By sharing some our life's footsteps together, a very special bond developed between Michael and myself. You could “feel” his innocence, sincerity, sharing of L.O.V.E., the child within, and his desire to “Heal the World.” “I want everybody in the world to be on one page. A page titled L.O.V.E.” - Michael Jackson.
One of the nicest comments someone else close to Michael during the late 1990's to about 2003 shared with me was that after I “retired” from the Neverland project, Michael would often mention me. And when Michael was developing ideas for a new amusement park in Las Vegas, NV, my name was immediately brought up to contact for assistance. It is so unfortunate he will never be able to make that call...
